Click here to go to the Main tuning page. We should distinguish some modifications for the Sporting, the Sporting Speedgear, the Sporting JTD. Here it is a list of some modifications appliable to the Punto Sporting Mk2, when they make sense.
Bigger tires for Punto Sporting Mk2 Punto Sporting Mk2's stock tires are the 185/60 R14. Here in Italy the car is registered with three measures, which are:
Fitting 17 inch wheels Please look the page of Tuning the Punto HGT where it is explained well. One of the differences between Punto Sporting Mk2 and Punto HGT is the colour
of the side mirrors. The HGT model has them coloured with the same colour of the
car, while the Sporting model hasn't them coloured, but they are black. Several
Sporting owners have coloured them in order to have their own Sporting looking
as HGTs.
Changing the induction kit The travel of the air from outside to the throttle body is very obstacolated
by a reduced mean section and by a long hose with loses a lot of final torque.
This is why Negrente modified completely that travel with a shorter one. They
installed a CDA BMC filter on the shorter path. The air is taken from the mouth
where the air flow should guarantee a good aspiration for the engine.
Exhaust collectors The Punto Sporting Mk2 has on the market two solutions for the exhaust collectors:
Braccio (Classic Car from Bergamo) made some tests with both the collectors and said the CTSS 4/1 collector is really sudden and gives you more torque, whilst the Supersprint 4/2/1 collector is more progressive. More pictures and info about the Supersprint collectors are available below. Braccio took some pictures of the CTSS collector, which I put here for your benefit:
Complete exhaust system Punto Sporting Mk2 has the possibility to install a complete exhaust system from Supersprint. They have prepared these parts:
I thank Alessandro Minuzzo for his courtesy to publish the pictures of the work on his car. Supercharger The Italian PL Racing put on its site some pictures of a supercharging kit for the Punto Sporting Mk2. I report here those pictures and I'm waiting from them more information about that kit.
The Italian firm World of Plastic srl makes a turbocharger kit for the Punto Sporting Mk2. It is distributed by Autotest. A special page about that conversion is available here. Some guys tried successfully to substitute the origine Fiat engine, the 1.2 16 valves one, with something more powerful. Here there are the stories of people who succeeded:
There is an option for the Punto HGT front brake disks, that could be adopted theoretically also for Punto Sporting Mk2. Please go to the Punto HGT tuning page for more details. Pop-off valve for Punto Sporting JTD Since Negrente has debuted worldwide with the pop-off valve for all the most common turbodiesel engines, even the Punto Sporting JTD can receive a pop-off valve. The most common perception about the usefulness of such valve is that also a diesel engine has somehow a counterpressure in the intake tubes, when changing to upper gears, just like the petrol engines. There is not an air barrier of the closed throttle body, which obstacles the pressured air to return back, but turbodiesel engines could have higher pressure rates. The main benefits of a popoff valve in the Punto Sporting JTD are listed here:
Negrente has a complete kit that can be installed in the Punto Sporting JTD. Here there are some snapshots about an installed one. More information is online at Negrente's website. There are different solutions for Punto Sporting Mk2 and Speedgear, but also the the diesel version, the Sporting JTD. Punto Sporting Mk2 and Speedgear Under construction... Punto Sporting JTD Several tuners offer real-time chip tuning or ready-to-go chips for Punto Sporting
JTD. All of them are able to cheat the ECU and most of them leave the user to
choose the maximum rate of power and torque. Anyway any chip tuning on Punto JTD tends to stop the maximum power in the range from 103 to 110 HP, although it is likely to go on with even more power and torque. The biggest limit of the car is due to the small turbocharger, which is not intended for great amount of air pumped, and also the transmission system, the same one of the Punto HGT, which can not resist more than 250 Nm. Several users noticed the clutch disk spinning a lot with almost all the gears when accelerating and even the engine supports not being able to resist the increased strains impressed to the car frame. Some users experienced the installation of the racing camshafts from Punto Sporting Mk1 to Punto Sporting Mk2. Please look at the special page with all the camshaft apertures.
