Punto Rally

This page is the richest page about Punto Rally in the Internet. I have managed on the left column almost all the contents about Punto rallying in me site. There are also more information in the links shown at the bottom of this page, about the latest developments of Fiat Punto Rally.

Three homologations for Fiat Punto

Fiat has homologated three cars to the FIA. Two car fiches are the strict model series from the original Punto HGT, whilst one fiche is about he rally kit car, which is derived from the Punto HGT, but it changes in almost all the details admitted by the kit series.

Punto HGT homologation

Fiat has homologated Fiat Punto HGT for rally races with fiche no. 5609/A and 5609/N. These are the parameters of the homologation:

  • Homologation date: 1/11/1999 (Nov 1999)
  • Valid upto: 2006+
  • Cylinder capacity: 1746.96 cmc
  • Minimum weight: 936 kg
  • Rim diameter: 15"
  • Rim width: 6"
  • Minimum front height: 305 mm
  • Minimum rear height: 300 mm
  • Maximum front track: 1441.5 mm
  • Maximum rear track: 1449.5 mm

These two homologations are mainly used in the Portoguese and Spanish rally championships, where national Fiat retail network promotes the Copa Fiat Punto and the Super Copa Fiat Punto.

The kit car

Fiat has homologated also Fiat Punto Rally for rally races for K/10 category, so that it can run for Super1600 and Junior Rally Championship.

The round badge, heir to a golden sporting past, returns to do battle on the field. The crown of laurels - perennially the symbol of victory - is sported by a Fiat Punto version prepared and sold by Fiat Auto Racing. The car is called the Fiat Punto Rally and it is produced for customers who wish to race in the 1600 Group A kit category.

The model comes with factory-fitted safety devices and is practically ready to drive out onto the track. All the preparation workshop has to do is adjust the ride set-up. This system allows Fiat to offer a competitive car yet keep costs down. The decision to outfit bodies directly in the factory allows us to save time and manpower when taking out all the parts we are allowed to remove: seats, trim etc.

The car is derived from the Punto HGT version (130 bhp), which has been specially revised to meet FIA rules. The designers made the styling look more aggressive while still maintaining all the individuality of the standard production model.

The dimensions have changed: compared to the HGT, the Fiat Punto Rally is 122 mm wider and 40 mm lower but the same length. The wings, bumpers and upper spoiler are made of composite.

When creating the Fiat Punto Rally, we took the sporty HGT version and then made all the changes needed to turn it into a rally car. The engineers at Chivasso were helped in their task by being able to draw on the wealth of experience built up by Fiat Auto Racing in competitions.

The main changes are as follows: engine capacity is reduced to 1579 cc (the Punto HGT is fitted with a 1.8 16v). This was achieved by altering stroke through the addition of a new, lighter camshaft. New racing pistons and connecting rods have also been added. The flywheel is also lighter, the exhaust manifold is new and the intake manifold is single-intake type. The power unit develops a mighty 215 bhp at 9000 rpm.
The integrated ignition and injection system is made by Magneti Marelli. The transmission consists of a single-plate, metal-ceramic clutch, a 6-speed gearbox (plus reverse) with front engagement and sequential control, and a self-locking, segmented differential.

The suspension is also new and developed to fit the wider body. It comes in two versions: one for asphalt and the other for unsurfaced roads. A light alloy strut at the front is combined with dual-setting hydraulic-pneumatic dampers. The rear end is fitted with an advanced version of the standard production torsion beam with springs co-axial with the dampers.
All joints are Uniball type. The two versions designed for asphalt and unsurfaced roads differ in the type of spring and damper used and also their ground clearances. The light alloy wheels measure 7 x 17 (asphalt) and 6 x 16 (unsurfaced roads).

The braking system comes with a double pump. The Brembo callipers and discs fitted at the front differ according to road surface type. The rear is fitted with standard production discs and Brembo callipers. The system also features front and rear load proportioning valves on the pedals, a regulator controlled by the driver and a hydraulic handbrake.
