The Christmas gallery update (Dec 21st 2003)

The month of December didn't have any update to the website, but the amount of postings and new cars submitted are quite intensive, and the quality of updates is still interesting. Here there are the Christmas additions or updates:

Added videogames with Fiat Punto (Dec 20th 2003)

Michael Grabowski sent me a great collection of snapshots, taken from several videogames for consoles and PCs. This month the gaming page has snapsnots from V-Rally 3, V-Rally 3 for GameBoy Advance, Xpand Rally for Windows PC, and even Granturismo 2 for Sony Playstation.

New cars in the gallery (Nov 22nd 2003)

New cars have been added to the users gallery and some other have been updated with new pictures or new features.

The Mid November gallery update (Nov 16th 2003)

Other cars came to my mailbox in the last week. Here they are:

Fiat Punto drivers at Wales Rally GB (Nov 12th 2003)

The last weekend the rallying world had its thrilling final act, the Wales Rally GB, as known as RAC, from November 5th to 9th, with all the world championship titles with not-yet-assigned reigning champions. The drivers World Rally Championship became a matter between three drivers, after doctors obliged Peugeot driver Richard Burns to stop because of fainting. Citroën drivers Carlos Sainz and Sebastien Loeb acted with the gravel revived Xsara, whilst Petter Solberg tried to overtake the Citroën leaders with his Subaru Impreza. Even the constructors World Rally Championship was still opening for Peugeot and Citroën brands.
What was most important - for our Italian point of view - was the conclusion of the Junior World Rally Championship, with the French youngster Brice Tirabassi defending the seven points gap over Suzuki works driver Salvador Canellas and the Italian names out of the last fight for the title after Andrea Dallavilla in 2001 with R&D Motorsport's Fiat Punto and even Dallavilla in 2002 with Vieffecorse's Citroën Saxo. Fiat Punto drivers performed quite well with the second place of Baldacci and sixth of Ceccato. More here

JWRC 2003: the sixth round, Rallye Catalunya (Oct 31st 2003)

It should have been the confirmation of the good progress of Fiat drivers in the Junior circus, but it didn't happen. First of all, Marco Ligato, the Italian-Argentinian driver of Top Run Racing had to withdraw, because an injury suffered during the second week, while hillcrossing with his mountain bike in Argentina. The dirty asphalt of Catalunya, in the hinterland of Lloret de Mar, should have fit very much the speed capabilities of Fiat Punto, because large tracks do not pose too many risks for the drivers and for the car reliability. Click here for the Rallye Catalunya 2003 webpage.

The last round of the Italian Rally Championship (Oct 19th 2003)

Paolo Andreucci won the Italian driver championship title, just on the last stage, after a fierce battle with another Fiat Punto driver, Giandomenico Basso. All the pictures and the full report is available here, at the page of Rally Adriatico 2003.

Tragedy at Salento Rally (Jun 24th 2003)

At 9:53 am the Rally del Salento faces the Litoranea Stage (km. 16,960). The best time is recorded by Gigi Galli (Mitsubishi) followed by Andreucci (Fiat) with a delay of 15", Travaglia (Peugeot) at 18"4, Longhi (Subaru) at 19"4, Basso (Fiat) at 25"3. Cunico (Mitsubishi), Rossetti (Citroen), Scorcioni and Dallavilla (Fiat) arrive after them. Galli leads the general classification, at the second rank Andreucci with a delay of 37"4, Longhi at 39"5, Travaglia at 40"2 and Cunico at 1'00"1.

At about 10:20 am a tragic accident upsets the Rally. Aghini-Roggia's Peugeot 206 goes off the road during the final passage of the third special stage. At about 300 mt from the end of the stage while facing a left turn, the crew lost the control of the car smashing against an old stone building, off the edge of the roadway near Santa Maria di Leuca, in the area of Castrignano del Capo.

The crash occurred near the finish line of the stage. An emergency car equipped with a mobile intensive care unit intervened immediately. After few minutes another emergency car and an emergency helicopter reached the accident site. All the details here.

Great pictures update of San Marino Rally (Jun 2nd 2003)

Photocris and Videorace made me have their great bunch of exclusive photos of the fifth round of the Italian rally championship. There also some spectacular jumps, you may see here.

Fifth round of Italian Rally Championship: leg 2 of San Marino Rally (May 31th 2003)

Paolo Andreucci, with the fifth overall position, which means the third position for the points valid in the Italian rally championship, rules the Super1600 class and gets the leadership of the championship itself. More information available here.

Fifth round of Italian Rally Championship: leg 1 of San Marino Rally (May 31th 2003)

The gravel ground gives more than a chance to the 4WD drivers, such Piero Longhi and Alex Fiorio with Subaru Impreza STi, and Franco Cunico, Gigi Galli and several other drivers with Mitsubishi Lancer. This event forecast is being confirmed just by the first stage, where Longhi is terribly fast as the WRC drivers. All the rest of the production car drivers populate the stage grid up to the ninth place, where we can find the first Super1600 car. As expected in the Italian series, it's the Fiat Punto Super1600 driven by Paolo Andreucci and codriven by Anna Andreucci, who positively impresses the crowd for the times, but there is another Fiat driver who really wants to battle in the Super1600, namely Andrea Dallavilla, supported by HF Grifone team. The rest of the Super1600 is far behind, Renato Travaglia, the Italian rally champion, is only 32th and Giandomenico Basso, the current leader of the Italian championship 2003, is only 29th. More information available here.

Next important meeting (May 29th 2003)

All the Puntopowers are invited to one of the biggest events of the Punto community, the yearly Garda meeting. It will be hosted in the v-?ery nice town Garda on Garda lake and the organizers expect the amount of Fiat Punto to be far over the 90 cars seen last year. If you like to partecipate, I suggest to visit the Italian site of PRC.

New cars in the users gallery (May 29th 2003)

Some cars have been added in the users gallery. Here they are:

Minor rally programmes around Europe (May 29th 2003)

I received in the last days several pictures of rally drivers who are bringing the Fiat Punto Super1600 or the older Fiat Punto Rally K/10 in other countries than the Fiat works teams. It's the case of Eric Brunson, who is driving a Balbosca's Fiat Punto in some French rallies and later the French championship series. Daniel and Jochen Feβl however made me have some very nice pictures of the Ferencz brothers on some stages of the Fehervar Rallye run on the last weekend. All the pictures and the information is available in the European rally activities 2003 page.
I added also some pictures brought by Photo Cris about the Punto Rally which took part at the Rally Bellunese 2003.

Fiat rally cars win wherever in Europe (May 22nd 2003)

Two weeks ago at the Wallonie Rally, the second round of the Belgian Division 1 Rally Championships Larry Cols, for the second consecutive year at the wheel of the Fiat Punto by Fiat Punto J-?unior team, defeated the reigning champion Collard with Citroen Saxo. More information and some pictures here.
Paolo Andreucci had a very glorious weekend at Tofas Rally in Turkey, where he had his first competitive outing with the Fiat Palio Super1600 and got the first class position just before the strong local driver Volkan Isik, who run with a Fiat Punto Super 1600. All the report of this event here.

New cars in the users gallery (May 22nd 2003)

Some cars have been added in the users gallery. Here they are:

Great gallery of Punto Mk2 rev.B (May 22nd 2003)

Pictures of the revision B of Punto Mk2 are coming up on the Internet and on various Italian magazines. A collection of about fifty pictures is available here in Puntopower. These pictures seem to be official part of Fiat merchandising and brochures, which are going printed massively. Another page has been build here in my website, where you can enjoy all that stuff.

More inner details about rev.B (May 15th 2003)

I have been feeded with new pictures and details about the next revision of Fiat Punto Mk2, due to the next month here in Italy, and just later in the rest of Europe. Please look here at the special page about the Punto Mk2 rev.B.

Whiz's Punto HGT added (May 15th 2003)

DJ Whiz from Poland sent me some pictures of his own broom yellow Punto HGT. The page is available here.

Yaron's NOS kit on Punto HGT (May 12th 2003)

Yaron S sent me an interesting tail-?story about his own experience about NOS kits on the Punto HGT. That kis seems to give the car about 50 HP more power, which is more than enough to beat a lot of more powerful cars, such Clio RS Sport and Golf VR6. All the story in Yaron's page.

Rally Prealpi Trevigiane 2003 (May 12th 2003)

Photocris and Videorace made me have some pictures of the last event of the Italian Challenge Rally Terra, the gravel trophy in the Italian rally series. The event had five Super1600 cars, primely Baldacci and Cecchettini's Punto Rally cars. All the pictures and rally report at this page.

If you notice some misunderstanding or some error or missing part, I am really happy to fix it! Click here to go to the Punto Rally catalogue.

Gallery update (May 6th 2003)

I updated the users gallery with new cars and new picture updates to some existing cars. Here they are:

Andreucci wins Targa Florio (May 5th 2003)

Paolo Andreucci fights up to the last stage and wins the glorious Targa Florio, one of the oldest races in the car history. The Tuscan driver, at the wheel of the Fiat Punto by Procar and N Technology, and codriven by Anna Andreussi, after some troubles in the first leg, when he was able to pace the other top drivers, like Travaglia and Basso, but he suffered a puncture on the last stage and an issue to the steering assisted system of his Punto. More information and pictures available here.

Pop-off valve for Sporting JTD (May 2nd 2003)

Since Negrente has debuted worldwide with the pop-off valve for all the most common turbodiesel engines, even the Punto Sporting JTD can receive a pop-off valve, as shown in this page. The most common perception about the usefulness of such valve is that also a diesel engine has somehow a counterpressure in the intake tubes, when changing to upper gears, just like the petrol engines. There is not an air barrier of the closed throttle body, which obstacles the pressured air to return back, but turbodiesel engines could have higher pressure rates.

It's time of the fourth round of the Italian Rally Championship (May 2nd 2003)

Today there is the first leg of the two legs based event Targa Florio 2003. This rally is a tarmac round, with several very fast tracks, where Super1600 cars could really exploit their power and lightness. Everybody expects a stron-?g performance from Andreucci, Travaglia, Basso, Dallavilla, and other Italian experienced drivers. I will follow the event with some reports during these days and I will add also a bunch of exclusive photos from Videorace and Photocris.

Baldacci's experience at Pirelli International (May 2nd 2003)

Mirco Baldacci told me some experiences at the wheel of the orange Hitec's Fiat Punto, about the Pirelli International Rally, the first round of the British Rally Championship. The event, a full gravel rally, with several fast stages covered by fog banks is very similar to the Network Q Rally, the last round of the Junior World Rally Championship, which has been run also by other drivers of the Junior pool, like Kris Meeke, Guy Wilks, and Martin Stenshorne. All the Mirco's experience in the Pirelli International 2003 page.

I measured also the weight of my car, using a Sparco four-plate electronic weighing machine for race cars. The car has been weighed with 1/3 full of petrol, so I estimated the real net weight. Full details of the experience in the my car's page.

New carbon fiber cockpit for Punto Rally 2003 (Apr 18th 2003)

Seen again on Paolo Andreucci's car at Rally Millemiglia, we noticed the changed solution for the central tunnel. The original central body of Fiat Punto Mk2, with air outlets, the air conditioning commands, and several instrumentation switches have been removed in favour of a lighter carbon fiber frame, with more useful instrumentation for rallying purposes. All the developments on Fiat Punto Rally are available at the Punto Rally 2003 page.

Baldacci at Pirelli Rally (Apr 18th 2003)

Mirco Baldacci has been enlisted in the Pirelli Rally valid for the British Rally Championship due for April 25th 2003. The Cuneo based Italian team is taking to England two cars with gravel setup, so that Pesticcio will start the British championship with a very competitive car, whilst the Sanmarinese driver aims differently the event. The full article at the Pirelli Rally 2003 page.

Burnout video of Malù (Apr 17th 2003)

Pica, from Rome, made me have the mythic burnout of Malù, his owned Punto HGT, which is still under construction... The video is really amazing: it's a burnout, which has been clipped for the production of the Playstation 2 and Windows PC Burnout 2. The video has been recorded with the well known Malù, the Punto HGT of Pica, who can admire here on Pu-?ntoPower.

Some cars updated (Apr 17th 2003)

New page for Sporting Mk1 tuning (Apr 17th 2003)

There is another page in PuntoPower, for the Punto Sporting Mk1. It is intended for all owners of Punto Sporting Mk1, but even other Punto Mk1 owners. At now there is only a tip, about the final drive ratio by German Hörmann.

Höelbling wins Super1600 class at Liburna (Apr 13th 2003)

In the Hitec sporting activities, apart the full support of Mirco Baldacci for the Junior world rally championship, and Leon Pesticcio and the same Sanmarinese driver for British championship, there is also the sporadic partecipation to other races, like the Coppa Liburna during the last weekend.
The Italian Veronese driver Luca Höelbling with the orange coloured Fiat Punto won the shortlisted Super1600 category in Tuscany in the one-leg based event, with impressive times on gravel and constantly faster than the rest of the crews with 2WD cars. Höelbling got the 10th overall position.

Thanks to full courtesy of Steve from Ireland and Oisin O'Briain, the manager of the Fiat Punto Abarth Cup for the Irish championship, a lot of pictures has been uploaded also in Puntopower.com. Denning wins at Kirkistown the first round of the Irish Fiat Punto Abarth Cup (Apr 8th 2003)

The opening round of the 2003 Fiat Punto Abarth Cup took place at Kirkistown on Saturday (5th April) with Quentin Smith (Rathfarnham) starting from pole but in the race it was main rival Liam Denning (Rathfarnham) who took the win.
Starting alongside Smith on the front row of the grid, Denning got the jump on the AMF Motorsport driver taking the lead on the high speed run down to the first corner. With Denning in front, the pair quickly opened up a gap over Brian Hade (Rathfarnham) who came home third to make it an all Rathfarnham podium. The page of the Fiat Punto Abarth Cup is here.

Weekend at Rally Millemiglia (Apr 7th 2003)

I followed the event online during the first leg on Friday 4th, whilst on Saturday I was at the event, where I took a quite good collection of pictures, which will be put online very soon. In the meanwhile I prepared also some detailed reports about both the legs, which have been dominated by the solid performance of Giandomenico Basso, who avoided any puncture and maximized the results in the Italian Rally Championship, with a one-two after the last two events. More information are here.

A new page about the Fiat Cup 2003 is under construction here.

Sergio Vallejo arrived second at the Rallye Mediterraneo, the first round of the Spanish rally championship. This year the Spanish championship title is won without WRC cars, but only with Super1600 or group N cars. Sergio Vallejo, the Fiat works driver, scored a promising second position. More information here in the Spanish rally 2003 page.

Great update of the users gallery (Mar 26th 2003)

Today a long list of new pages has been added to the Puntopower gallery. Here they are:

Full report of Rally of Ciocco (Mar 23rd 2003)

Giandomenico Basso wins the Rally of Ciocco, the second round of the Italian rally championship (CIR), which has been dominated largely by the Fiat drivers. The eighteen special stages, run on about an half dozen of tracks, completely on tarmac, showed the real performance and lightness of the Super1600 cars versus the great traction of the Group N cars, which sport better on hard grounds such as the gravel stages and the wet asphalt. Click here for the full report.

Giovanni Mancini, the gentleman who races the Italian CIVT championship since 2001, made me have the authorization the full technical article about the Punto HGT he drives in the class. He got quite good performances, due to the great torque and the limited consumption of the 16 valves VFD engine by Fiat.

Jenson, from Taiwan, sent me a nice collection of pictures of their own Fiat Punto Club meeting. It is really fantastic seeing where passion for Italian cars is able to reach, such as that far Eastern country. You may see them in their special page.

Tutta Terra Toscana (Mar 3rd 2003)

Tutta Terra Toscana has achieved a result during the last weekend: the Italian championship 2003 is really exciting, altough the WRC cars have been banned from the top series, the Italian Rally Championship (CIR). It was also the event where everyobdy saw the values on the fields, the production cars versus the Super 1600 cars, and the current champion, Travaglia, versus his own usual competitors. More information here.

Pesticcio secures Fiat Drive (Mar 3rd 2003)

It has today been confirmed that Leon Pesticcio will drive a Fiat Punto Super 1600 in this year's Pirelli British Rally Championship.
The car will be the latest specification version of Fiat's S1600 contender, run by the Italian concern, Team Hi-Tec SRL, who are currently behind Mirco Baldacci's Junior World Rally Championship campaign.
Following meetings with Fiat and Team Principal, Fabrizio Borra, in Monte Carlo two weeks ago, Pesticcio's deal has now been agreed and a programme to contest all rounds of the PBRC, plus the Wales Rally GB, the final round of the JWRC.
Other than on Britain's round of the WRC, this will be the first time a Fiat Punto Kit car has been campaigned in the UK and the Italian manufacturer's high-revving hatchback is destined to add considerable interest to the British Championship's Super 1600 category.
As his surname suggests, Pesticcio has Italian ancestors and sees this association with Fiat as an excellent step forward in his rallying career.
"I am very pleased that I have been able to secure a drive with the team and to now have my plans in place for this season, said Pesticcio. "This is by far the best of the options that were available and I see this as a great opportunity for me. I just can't wait to get started."
The 21 year old from Bridgend will fly to Turin next week to commence testing in the car. He will also be joining the team on each of the JWRC rounds to gain further World Rally experience.
Pesticcio will be co-driven throughout the year by Tim Sturla from Ashby.
Further details and confirmation of sponsors for Pesticcio's 2003 campaign will be announced shortly.

Upcoming rallies due for the next weekend (Feb 25th 2003)

The next weekend will be for the Punto lovers very interesting. We have two events where Fiat Punto Rally is the rallying star. An event is the secound round of the Junior World Rally Championship 2003, the Rally of Turkey, which starts on Thursday evening 27th 2003 at Antalya, a region a bit far from Irak. The second event is the first round of the Italian Rally Championship 2003, the Tutta Terra Toscana, a spectacular gravel rally where the Super1600 cars will be the stars, after WRC cars have been banned in the national championships. I hope to attend the second event with a full pictures reportage, whilst the first event will be broadcasted on Puntopower.com and JWRC.com both.

This edition, like the previous, is again a round not only of the WRC, but also the Junior World Rally Championship. Only four of the six Fiat Punto started the rally, but all the cars were reliable and let the Italian drivers to outstand in the final classification, with the third place of Marco Ligato with the Toprun's Fiat Punto codeveloped with N Technology.
