GLOSSARY
ASR (AntiSlip Regulation)
- The automatic traction control device that prevents the drive wheels
from slipping to reduce torque according to road surface grip level.
BODY COMPUTER - May be considered
a type of supervisor that acts as a connection port between the low speed
network and the high speed network while governing the work of both. It
is thus a Control Unit that co-ordinates the operation of all electric
and electronic systems on board.
CAN (Network) - The Controller
Area Network is the communication network used to exchange data and information
between the various car control units.
CONNECT OBN (Off Board Navigation)
- A member of the CONNECT family. An integrated GPS/GSM system with RDS
radio, CD player, handsfree phone, MP3 player and pictogram navigation
system. It is the first device that does not use CD-ROM maps for navigation
because all the information is sent out by a centralised system at the
Arese Contact Centre.
CRUISE CONTROL - Automatically
maintains a cruising speed set by the driver by controlling the engine
throttle. Simply turn the wheel on the left column switch to ON and then
turn another one (actually a manual accelerator) towards the '+' (or '-')
sign to achieve the required speed. When the ring is released, the car
continues to travel at the saved speed without the driver pressing the
accelerator pedal.
DUAL ZONE AUTOMATIC CLIMATE
CONTROL SYSTEM - A sophisticated climate control system that automatically
controls temperature, air flow, air distribution, compressor activation
and recirculation by means of an electronic control unit. It is also able
to guarantee two different temperatures simultaneously: one in the right
part of the passenger compartment and the other in the left.
DUALDRIVE - Electric power
steering system with two operating modes. The first ensures maximum interplay
between driver and vehicle (ideal over mixed rural routes). The second
lightens the steering and thus requires minimum effort and is ideal in
town driving and parking manoeuvres.
DUALOGIC - Hydraulic transmission
servo system. Applied to manual gearboxes (fitted to the 1.3 Multijet 16v
and 1.2 8v) and offers two operating modes: semiautomatic and automatic.
The automatic mode includes two programs (Normal and Economy).
EBD (Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution) - Brakeforce distribution corrector integral with the ABS.
The device is sensitive to rear axle grip and modulates brake action to
prevent the rear wheels locking.
ESP (Electronic Stability
Program) - Electronic vehicle stability control system that adjusts drive
torque and brakes wheels differentially if grip is lost to restore the
car to the correct trajectory.
HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistant)
- Electronic system that increases pedal pressure automatically during
emergency braking.
HILL HOLDER - System to assist
the driver during hill starts. It operates when the ESP control unit perceives
a change in vehicle gradient by means of a longitudinal acceleration sensor
located on the floor under the passenger seat.
MP3 (Mpeg Layer 3) - Highly
compressed digital audio file that uses a special algorithm to maintain
sound quality unchanged. MP3 files may be downloaded from the Internet
and saved on a CD-ROM. They can be played back on special sets.
MSR (Motor Schleppmoment
Regelung) - ASR system function that prevents drive wheels slipping during
deceleration.
MULTIJET - Multiple (3 to
5) injection system that is a fundamental part of the new second generation
Common Rail turbodiesel engines.
NATURAL POWER - A version
that offers two fuel systems (methane and petrol) that operate independently
of one another. This is an absolute first for segment B.
PARKING SENSOR - Indicates
the progressive reduction in distance from obstacles to the driver by means
of acoustic signals during parking manoeuvres.
RAIN SENSOR - Automatically
activates the windscreen wiper when rain falls. Also adjusts sweep rate
according to raindrop intensity.
RES (RESUME) - On a Cruise
Control system, this is the button that restores car speed to the last
value saved when the device was turned off (e.g. to carry out a braking
manoeuvre).
SMS (Short Messages Service)
- GSM phone service that sends a text message of 120 to 160 characters
between two mobile phones or between a service centre and a phone.
SPEEDGEAR - electronically
controlled continuous automatic transmission. Customers can always choose
between three driving modes: two automatic (one designed for performance
and the other for comfort) and a manual mode (sequential). When in manual
mode, gear changes can be made without taking your foot off the pedal and
six speeds are available.
