Neste Rally Finland 2003
The eventThe fourth round of the Junior World Rally Championship 2003 was the Neste Rally Finland, formerly known as the 1000 Lakes rally, because of hosted in a very nice region in the southern Finland. The Junior Championship came to its first half with this struggling event, where tradition says the rally is always won by local drivers and foreign ones have no chances for the final victory. This is why in the Super1600 class Kosti Katamajäki and Daniel Carlsson are considered favourite players of the 2WD Super1600 cars. There are however some Junior drivers, who can play starring parts, first of all the French rising star Brice Tirabassi and his speedy Renault Clio Super1600 brought by Oreca Team, but also Mirco Baldacci, the Sanmarinese driver with Hitec Fiat Punto Super1600. After the stages of the first leg, the games are clear: it's a matter between the Suzuki driver Daniel Carlsson and Brice Tirabassi, although there are several drivers who perform best scratch times, like the Briton Guy Wilks, the Sanmarinese Mirco Baldacci, and the local driver Kosti Katajamäki. Regular speed merchant Daniel Carlsson in the Suzuki Ignis bagged five of the nine stage wins, but a puncture on SS8 knocked him off target and the Swede is only fourth 1m20.1sec off Tirabassi, which became the leader after the first leg. Disappointing retirements are worthly to notice in the Ford Puma teams, where Abdo Feghali crashes just in the Spectator Superspecial Killeri, whilst the crews Stenshorne-Jenkins and Harrach-Kolbach withdrew before lining the very first stage. Only Guy Wilks with the remaining Puma set the best time on SS4, but then slid into a ditch on SS6 and lost nearly four minutes, after intercom problems caused confusion with his pace notes. During the first leg, Mirco Baldacci had a worst landing after one of those infamous big jumps and retires with a suspension failure of his Fiat Punto. Just one stage before, Cecchettini, with Fiat Punto by Balbosca team, retires for similar reasons and the only Fiat Punto in the battle are the cars from Top Run Racing, driven by Massimo Ceccato and the Italian-argentinian Marcos Ligato. Some rumours were talking the Fiat cars had a bad setup for the Finnish grounds, where punctures are uncountable and jumps to the fly are longer than ever. It's however the Ouninpohja in the morning of the second leg, the most threatening special stage of the event, which has been run twice and where the trustful local drivers Ville-Pertti Teuronen and Kosti Katamajäki have been forced to retire. The Sanmarinese Alessandro Broccoli with Opel Corsa by SAB Motorsport takes also heavy risk in the same stage and flies on the 'big jump' at 107 km/h over than three meters, with some failures, but a car still on the road. However the second leg is a solo of Daniel Carlsson who sets five consecutive best scratch times and gets again the leadership, left by Brice Tirabassi who is victim of some puncture in the second leg. In the Sunday leg most drivers decided to consolidate their positions today after two exceptionally tough days of rallying. Carlsson controlled his advantage over Renault driver Brice Tirabassi, while Guy Wilks finished third in his Ford Puma. Aava ended up fourth after passing Canellas on the opening stage of the day. Bad luck for Ceccato who went off on SS22 and left the seventh position for Ligato, the only Fiat driver of the Turin maker. Daniel Carlsson scored his and Suzuki's first Junior World Rally Championship win on Rally Finland this weekend. A measured drive through Sunday's final six stages ensured Carlsson his win. Tirabassi finished 56 seconds behind the Suzuki driver to increase his lead at the top of the JWRC standings while Guy Wilks rounded of an impressive Finnish debut with third overall. "It's fantastic to score the first Junior World Rally Championship for myself and for Suzuki," said Carlsson. "We've been close a couple of times before and to finally achieve the first victory is an amazing feeling." Tirabassi moves up to 28 points in the championship - 10 clear of his closest rival Carlsson - after his second place. "This result is extremely satisfying because it is very good for the championship," said Tirabassi. "I am looking forward to the rest of the season with optimism as we will be back on asphalt for two events." Wilks couldn't hide his delight with his third place on his first visit to Finland. "I am simply chuffed to bits," he said. "Our last podium was third in the Rally of Turkey, but we were definitely not as competitive there as we have been here. It has been a simply fantastic weekend and I am so delighted with this result. I have never been to Finland at all before but I can tell you I will be looking forward to our next trip here!"
