Punto Mk2 rev.B (project 188)

A lot of anticipations are available in this page:

The Fiat Punto Mk2 rev.B is rumoured since the beginning months of 2002, but very few pictures have been seen since those months. The speculative information is moreover unconfirmed, because Quattroruote, the most popular Italian car monthly magazine, parted from the Fiat Group.
During 90's, Quattoruote was not very unpartial with Fiat cars, without being very critic with the Italian cars. Then Fiat Auto had and is having a severe marketing crisis and the Italian magazine decided to unshare the common view with Fiat and it started a more than severe judgement with the Fiat cars, with the hope that it could be sufficient to stimulate Fiat in the direction of the higher quality and better listening of the customers.
Apart those facts, some pictures about the next model are available and it seems that Fiat will have more than two models as now. Fiat will have a three doors, a five doors car and even a multipurpose vehicle, named Punto MPV, like the current Fiat Stilo MPV.
What's clear enough is that the Punto Mk2 (project 188) is due to have its last restyling during the mid part of 2003, whilst the next Punto, the Mk3, is due for the beginning of 2005 where the joint venture with Opel will give the market a product developed in conjunction.

Engines

The rumours about the engines are very likely. Here they are:

Engine Capacity Valves Ecology Power
Kw/HP
Torque
Nm/kgm
1.2 1242 cmc 8 Euro 4* 44/60 102/10,4
1.4 (Sporting)
1368 cmc 16 Euro 4 70/95 128/13,0
1.8 (Abarth) 1747 cmc 16 Euro 4 98/133 164/16,7
1.3 JTD Multijet
new Fiat engine
1248 cmc 16 Euro 4 51/70 180/18,4
1.9 JTD 1910 cmc 8 Euro 3 63/85 196/20,0
1.9 JTD Multijet 1910 cmc 8 Euro 3 74/100 260/16,5

Several sinergies are going on with Opel and General Motors. Expect also some common parts in both the cars. A double fueled engine with petrol and methane is due also for the next restyling.

Wheels (project 188 restyling)

Pictures of the car (project 188 restyling)

This pictures have been taken partly from Quattroruote and it refers the last restyling of the Punto Mk2, due for the mid of 2003. The most remaining information shown here has been taken from Italiaspeed.

The restyled Fiat Punto, which will go on sale this summer, reveals its new large headlamps and Stilo-look more profiled front bumper in these images of a barely disguised prototype seen testing. Two round rimmed headlamps sit behind a glass cover, which slots into a "family" style front grille. In the flesh the headlamps look particularly awkward and ungainly, their overlarge size failing to blend into the small car's appearance.

The ageing current Fiat Punto, which undergoes its third and final facelift in June, will receive a revised front end that draws its styling cues from the Stilo, to harmonise the "family" look.
This lightly disguised model, being used at a journalist and dealer awareness forum recently, gives a glimpse of a restyled front end which uses the current Punto's headlamps but with a larger more prominent Stilo-style front grille and re-worked bumper. Thick side rubbing strips follow the family look. This is not a final version however, as the current Punto's lights have been ditched in favour of much larger units, while the rear has been restyled.
The revised Punto will feature a hot "Abarth" performance version with a Selespeed gearbox option. The Abarth will have a restyled front end to set it apart from the standard models as well as giving it a more aggressive look. LPG versions (first seen in the current Punto at the Bologna Motor Show last month) will be a production option also.

Pictures of the Punto B-MPV, Idea (project 350)

This is the first image of the Fiat Punto B-MPV which makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. A neat and tidy design, Fiat's first mini-MPV sports its Stilo-inspired front end and its enlarged dimensions and longer front windscreen.

Picture no.2

The Fiat Punto B-MPV is caught testing again near Turin. The company's first venture into the small MPV sector is based on the Punto saloon with a slightly lengthened wheelbase, higher ride height and roofline, allowing the Punto saloon's class-leading interior room to be improved upon. Clearly seen are the new-look indicators which stretch out below the headlamps. The front end draws from the Stilo-inspired look that the new Punto restyling will offer.
Due to make its debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show, the Punto B-MPV will be available with 1.2 and 1.6-litre petrol engines as well as the all-new 1.3 Multijet 16v common-rail diesel that is expected to offer a class leading 60mpg. Fiat's "Duodrive" system that increases power steering assistance while undertaking parking manoevers will be featured along with keyless starting.
