Rally Millemiglia 2005
The second round of the Italian Championship 2005 took place on the stages of Rally Millemiglia, drawn in the North-eastern area of Brescia's province in Northern Italian. The twisty roads of Valsabbia hosted also the stars of the European Rally Championship, who came here for the first round of series, with the Martinican Renault Clio Super1600 Team Europe's Simon Jean Joseph and Procar Fiat Punto Super1600's Giandomenico Basso.
After an unexpected result of the Italian Championship at Rally of Ciocco and Valle del Serchio, where Piero Longhi achieved his first successful rally with a group N spec Subaru Impreza Type-C outperforming the lighter Super1600 cars, due to harsh and tricky weather conditions, with almost all the tarmac very dirty, wet and covered by ice and snow patches, everybody guessed the Super1600 cars would have had better luck on Millemiglia stages.
In fact the event has been won by Renato Travaglia, with his new Renault Clio Super1600, but Piero Longhi and other 4WD drivers, like Mitsubishi Ralliart Italia's Andrea Navarra and Rally Project Mitusbishi's Gianfranco Cunico tried their best efforts to get the victory.
Fiat drivers, with Paolo Andreucci in the Italian Championship and Giandomenico Basso in the European series, were not brilliant in both legs of this rally.
Giandomenico Basso suffered an unprecise setup of his Fiat Punto Abarth Super1600, and was able to get his best scratch only on the second leg, the Colle San Zeno stage, run twice on Sunday 10th April.
On the second run of the stage, Basso was keeping the same pace, but a strange rumour from the engine prevented him to push hard as the previous run, in order to keep the car to the finish line and get the first points of the European series.
Paolo Andreucci has no more luck than his Procar team mate, and has a puncture who made him compromise the final result.
