Larry Cols in Belgian Division 1 championship 2003
Rally of Wallonie
Pieter Tsjoen and Eddy Chevaillier (Toyota Corolla WRC) claimed their second
victory of the season at the Rallye de Wallonie, round two of the Belgian Division
1 Rally Championship. Bruyneel was a distant second in a Toyota Celica GT4, while
Van Woensel (Lancer Evo 6) was the top Gr.N runner in third. With a second victory
to his credit, the Future World pair has 20 points at the head of the point table,
with Bruyneel on 11 and Snijers dropping to third on 8.
One month after Snijers has lost the battle of Spa, he started the Wallonie
with a new Impreza P2000. Tsjoen was not afraid and signed the "scratch" in SS1
and SS2. Despite a puncture in SS3, the Toyota driver was still leading the rally
by a margin of 8 seconds over Snijers. SS3 was the last special stage for Snijers,
who retired at the next service (broken engine). Then, Tsjoen dominated a dry
and sunny competition, finishing more than five minute ahead of Bruyneel. Van
Woensel took the Gr.N victory while Bouche (Lancer Evo 7), finishing 7th, has
to face to hub problems. One of the highlights of the race was Cols's (Punto S1600)
battle with Collard (Saxo S1600). During the last section, Cols managed to take
the lead over the reigning S1600 champion. On the podium, Tsjoen dedicated his
win to his friend Rocco Theunissen who died of meningitis 15 days ago.
"The battle with Snijers was a little bit to
short but I can\'t complain about this victory", told Gèrard
Magniette, team manager of Future World. "Saturday
afternoon, Pieter drove to increase the gap with all the others drivers. Then,
Sunday, we were able to answer to a request of our long-term partner Michelin.
We have tested some new type of tyres in order to prepare the Ypres Westhoek Rally.
I\'ve told to Pieter and Eddy that, end of June, in Ieper, a victory by a margin
of 5 seconds will be enough!"
Chris Van Woensel took victory in Group N and finished on the podium on a third
place.

Larry Cols' press about Wallonie's event
Jambes - The Punto Junior Team reached its goal by winning the super 1600 class
in the 20th edition of the "Rallye de Wallonie". proving once again that this
team of youngsters can reach the level of the more professional and experienced
teams !
They are excited to show their talents and the potential of the Punto 1600.
Fabio Lazzerini, head of R Tec, confirms that the car is running very well
at the moment so they can concentrate more on the work of the young mechanics
during the services. Gilles Laschet said: "In contrast
to last year, this season looks more promising. The youngsters work much better
together this season and the language problems are also resolved."
Besides all this, the experiment with the first female mechanic has also been
a success. She brings a more feminine touch to the sport.
In the Super 1600 class, where a combination of speed and driving skill is
required, the Rallye de Wallonie is an event with a reputation for separating
the men from the boys!
But Filip Goddé (the co-driver) also felt comfortable on the stages as
he had done this event a couple of times before. He not only guided Larry through
the special stages properly but also gave good advice.
"This year's championship will be much harder to win
than last season's...
The battle between Olivier Collard (Citroen Saxo) and myself is very intense.
Even harder than it was in Spa during the first rally of the season. But all this
can only make the competition more interesting and exciting,"
said Larry.
The tense battle for the lead in the super 1600 class kept the rally fans wondering
who would become the winner. At the start of the last special stage the difference
between Larry and Olivier was only 5 seconds. Talking about a thrilling finish,
eh?
Everyone was excited to know the stage times of both drivers. And yep... Larry
won... by 17 seconds! Another great victory for the team.
By winning the super 1600 class twice in a row, Larry and Filip are leading
quiete comfortably. The next event for the Fiat Punto Junior Team will be the
24-hour of Ypres on the last weekend in June.
Filip Goddé's personal view of the event will follow later on !! Stay on
the lookout !!!
Larry Cols has prepared a Fiat Punto HGT Gr.N (N/3) for his sister Daisy who drives in the Belgian Rally Division 2 Championship.
Larry has done almost everything by itself, but the car is not very prepared. He is going to install on the Daisy racing car these components:
