Small snapshot of the Puntopower

My HGT's mods

My initial aim about my car was to leave it original. I didn't want to apply any modification. Then I knew some Punto users in the tuning community, who affected me with a malicious virus, the elaborus morbus.
This is how I started tuning my car. The level of modifications is at now not very hard, but there is a fertile ground for more modifications. What's sure is the fact I won't install ever nor turbokits, compressors, nor NOS injection kits: my car was born with an atmospheric engine and it will preserve such feature.
The target of my idea is of course the Punto Rally, which has the same reworked engine brought to ranges of incredible power and performance. This is how my evolutionary path will be tracked:

  • exhaust backbox
  • air filter
  • air induction kit
  • springs
  • wheel distancers
  • exhaust collectors
  • metallic kat
  • performance shockers
  • drilled brake disks and special pads
  • bigger tyres and wheels
  • bigger brake disks
  • fuel pressure regulator
  • ECU remapping
  • strut brace bar
  • racing camshaft
  • reworked engine head
  • special pistons
  • special connecting rods
  • special valves
  • lighter flywheel
  • high capacity fuel injectors

During the evolution of the path, I marked some steps which have been named Evo N - they were just periods the car configuration kept stable - in the same manner some sporting cars are name during their releases, such the Mitsubishi Lancer or the older Lancia Delta Integrale.

Evo 1

The short list of the modifications at Evo 1 step (late 2001 edition, 143 HPs):

  • Supersprint final exhaust system
  • H&M air conic filter
  • 70mm engineered steel manifold from the air filter
to the throttle body by Negrente
  • Bridgestone Potenza RE-720 195/45 R15 tyres

No power measurements have been detected. I'm going to have some testbed measurements at the next stage. My personal feeling? I forecast my car has moved from 130 HPs to 140 HPs. Acceleration is really faster, in particular from 4500 to 7000 rpms, in particular from 120 km/h and faster.

Evo 2

The short list of the modifications after Evo 2 step (winter 2002 edition, 150 HPs):

  • Supersprint final exhaust system
  • H&M air conic filter
  • 70mm engineered steel manifold from the air filter
to the throttle body by Negrente
  • MKM metallic kat (satisfying CO emissions bounds)
  • Supersprint special exhaust collectors

The car is angry than ever: the Supersprint exhaust collectors have increased the maximum torque and the pick-up responses are very good with the last two modifications.

Evo 3

The short list of the modifications after Evo 3 step (late autumn 2002 edition, 152 HPs):
  • Supersprint final exhaust system
  • Koni Sport adjustable dampers
  • H&R springs fitted by Koni kit (-35 mm)
  • 70mm engineered steel manifold from the air filter
to the throttle body by Negrente
  • MKM metallic kat (satisfying CO emissions bounds)
  • Supersprint special exhaust collectors
  • BMC CDA carbon air filter
  • HRM front and rear distancers (16 mm)
  • Toyo Proxes T1S 195/45 R15 tyres on front wheels
  • Bridgestone Potenza RE-720 195/45 R15 tyres on rear wheels
  • Omnicompetition front brake disks (drilled, vented)
  • Sparco T-51 brake pads

The power of my car was already enjoying, but the masses distribution was susceptible to the original suspensions by Fiat, really confortable, but not so performant, when driving hard. The full Koni Sport kit changes the game and it makes my Punto HGT a real road killer, against Clios or Peugeot's! The quite hard setup gives a very stable handling in any kind of curve. The mixed roads with several hairpin curves, short straight lines and even long sequences of 45-degrees curves are the right food for my car.
The setup is further partially adjustable: I may change the damping effect of any dampers almost in real time and it gives me the possibility to change the reactions in order to maximize the performance and ignore the comfort, or give the latter the most and compromise the performance.

My HGT's performance

I made some workbench tests of my car in order to answer the questions posed by several friends. I made them also to being able to compare the power and torque before and after remapping the engine control unit, as soon as I will be able to do it. You will find some pictures below of my car while benchtesting. Click here for the testbench of my car at Evo 2.

I made some tests with my Punto HGT. Those meaurements are very approximative and have to be confirmed with better instrumentation.

Other facts

I measured also the weight of my car, using a Sparco four-plate electronic weighing machine for race cars. The car has been weighed with 1/3 full of petrol, so I estimated the real net weight.

It's interesting to notice that weight distribution is 67% on front wheels, and 33% on rear wheels, and that left and right distribution is perfectly balanced. This weight distribution is just perfect for two wheel front drive cars, such Fiat Punto.
Why does my car weigh more than declared by the factory? The weight of the four wheel distancers cannot be ignored at it is about 4-5 kg; other modifications, like Koni suspension kit, air induction kit and exhaust system do not vary a lot the full weight.
There are some accessories such the airbag for the right passenger, side airbags, multiCD charger, the rear original wing, and some personal goods, such as glasses, an umbrella, some music CDs.

My videos

You may have access to some videos in the videoclips page. They show my car and me facing some interesting alsphalt curves, that could be perfect for a rally special stage or a hill crossing race.
