Rally San Martino di Castrozza 2003

The seventh round of the Italian Rally Championship sports one of the best rallies in Italy, the Rally of San Martino di Castrozza e Primiero. The rally stages are hosted in beautiful valleys of Italian Alps, with fast tracks and quite good ground, that is the favourite landscape for Super1600 cars. To describe the full scene, the usual mixture of cars is even on the stage also at San Martino: we have also the WRC cars, because the rally is valid also for the European championship, but they don't rob points to the actors of the national series.

In fact the final result confirms such expectations, where the lightweight and small sized cars are really fast and unbeaten by the gravel eaters Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII in the group N setup, but Gigi Galli, the first works driver of Mitsubishi Ralliart Italia, is really able to pace the Super1600 armada, setting the best total time after the first leg.

The retirement stops the Livigno based driver from the victory for the Italian Rally championship, also the Fiat drivers were just ready during the first special stages of the second leg to counterattack the dominion of the Galli. After Galli's debacle, the points for the Italian Rally championship is a matter between the Fiat drivers: Paolo Andreucci is just ahead of 17 seconds over Giandomenico Basso, after the first group of stages in the second leg.

During the last round of stages, Basso opts to take heavy points and leave the class victory to Andreucci, who is however better supported by N Technology, who gives him always the best hardware of the Super1600 world. Both the drivers drive carefully and they give strong results to Fiat constructor and even to their own standings in the Italian leaderboard, where Andreucci confirms the first position, while Basso gets again the second one.

Travaglia is still behind with his Peugeot 206 Super1600, which is enhancing and going faster and faster after each round, but still not as faster as Punto Super1600.
