The fourth race of the Junior World Rally Championship is the ADAC Deutschland Rally. This rally is something new for the World Rally Championship: it is expected to be one of the fastest rallies ever seen, because composed with straight lines and good quality of the tarmac. In the Super 1600 cars, anybody expects the more powerful engines to launch some cars in the top standings.

Opinions before the rally

Procar and TRT at ADAC Deutschland Rally (Aug 20th 2002)
(from TRT Sport Promotion info press)

Procar and TRT with Nicola Caldani go at the Deutschland Rally to confirm the work done in the last months. The Versilia's driver, fifth in the Junior championship is looking for the exploit on the german tarmac.
The world programme of the joint Procar and TRT Sport Promotion in the world Junior championship goes on. The fourth race of the series for the Super 1600 cars will have place from 22nd to 25th August in Germany, at the ADAC Deutschland Rally, a race added this year for the first time in the World Rally Championship table.
The stages, completely on asphalt, are unexplored for the most rallymen and Nicola Caldani, codriven by Dario D'Esposito, fifth in the classification with only three points behind the top, has the possibility to go on podium. An enlightened version of the Fiat Punto Abarth will be given to the Versilian driver, very similar to the car which let Paolo Andreucci win the Italian title in the Super 1600 category at the rally of San Martino di Castrozza.
"Nicola, though he is able to drive quite well on every ground, as any latin driver has an asphalt nature" says Carlo Cassina, the sport director, "and this ability united to the fact the race is unknown for anybody, poses him on the situation he could really go to the podium and that's strategic before running the next Junior race, the Sanremo Rally". "We face a difficult race" says Nicola Caldani "nobody knows it; it will be hard also the the cognitive factor. We are confident in the nature of asphalt experts and the performance that the Fiat Punto lets us to do, the "light" Punto to advance in the classification and, maybe reach the podium, because we are five drivers in only three points".
"After the third standing at the Acropolis" says Caldani "I took part the the Lucca Rally, where I got the second place, looking for learning the most from the Punto I had never driven on the tarmac. These positive feelings have been acquired whom I hope to confirm in Germany and legitimate the efforts of Trt Sport Promotion and Procar".

Comments after the rally

Suzuki aim for top result on the Rally Deutschland
(courtesy of www.rally-live.com)

Suzuki are confident of a strong performance on the all-new Rallye Deutschland, first time in the World rally Championship, after a trouble-free test last Sunday. All three privateer Suzuki teams - from Finland, Germany and Japan - are delighted with their preparations for the fourth round of the Junior World Championship, which is based in Trier, Germany, from August 22-25.
The pre-event test took place over one day on an old airfield near Bitburg. This is similar to the terrain on day two of the Rallye Deutschland, which takes place over the rough Baumholder military ranges. Conditions on the test were baking hot (28 degrees centigrade) but none of the three teams reported a single problem throughout the day. In total, drivers Niki Schelle, Juha Kangas and Kazuhiro Niwa completed around 120 kilometres.
The main purpose of the test was to ensure reliability, and also to evaluate appropriate set-ups. The Rallye Deutschland is unique: surfaces vary considerably from leg to leg, and some areas of the rally are more reminiscent of a gravel rally than an asphalt event. The Baumholder military ranges, used for leg two, are characterised by concrete roads which were originally designed for testing the army's tanks.
The Suzukis which will be rallied in Germany are built to the latest homologation, with a new steering rack new gearbox, and improved exhaust manifold. The gear ratios provide better torque and acceleration, with the result that the top speed of the Ignis on the Rallye Deutschland will be about 170km/h.

For Niki Schelle, the Rallye Deutschland marks his home World Championship event. He has already tasted success on the Rallye Deutschland in the past, winning the Formula 2 category twice in an Opel Astra kit car. He said: "I'm aiming to finish in the points. I know this rally very well, and the car is performing brilliantly. Suzuki have worked very hard and the result is amazing. The car is very good and I was able to find the right set- up."
For the other two drivers, Deutschland will be a new experience. They face the additional challenge of making the mental transition to asphalt after completing two gravel rallies in Greece and Finland. Kangas said: "I'm looking forward to Deutschland. The progress we have made since our last asphalt rally in Catalunya is considerable. The car is a lot more precise now, and this will help us in Germany's constantly changing conditions."
Niwa is continuing his learning process and is delighted by the chance to gain more experience on asphalt. "I'm sure it will be a very difficult rally," he said. "But my confidence in the car is growing with every event."
This is mostly down to the hard work of the technical team at Suzuki Sport, who have made great steps forward in less than four rallies. Charlie Nichol, technical chief engineer at Suzuki Sport Europe, commented: "We have been working like hell since Monte Carlo. After the first rally we made a 'to-do' list - it contained over 60 items! We did them all before Greece. Now we have a smaller list of things to do, and we're working on them. We need time for testing and development, but we are slowly improving the car and I think we will see the first results of our efforts in Germany."

The TRT Sport Promotion driver retired during the second leg for an electrical issue with the Procar's Fiat Punto Super1600.

The murdering second leg of the ADAC Deutschland rally was fatal for Nicola Caldani. In the SS13, the Procar's Fiat Punto Super 1600, driven by the TRT Sport Promotion driver became and it had not restarted. The cause of the misfact, probably, an electrical trouble. At that moment the versilian driver had to abandon the fourth rally of the Junior championship.
The German experience of the team and Caldani finished with an harsh result. The experience started badly and it ended even worse, when the Procar's Punto was lying in the fifteenth position of the JWRC classification.
"Our approach was completely wrong with this rally - confessed Caldani after the retirement - we paid very expensively the fact to not testing the car I would have driven in the race, the Punto in the deepest level of enlightment. We had to fight against drivers and cars really prepared and motivated, whilst I had to battle with the car which had a setup different from my expectations.
The broken damper at the start amplified even the troubles. I had to reinvent my drive style like in an emergency, without concentrating to find the best car setup for the German stages. Today, in the second leg, anything got even worse. The roads in the military base were full of holes and rocks, very dirty, and a lot of mud. I had two punctures and I fell down in the classification even more. This experience ended at last, a very important experience for the next races. We made mistakes we must not repeat in the next races, if we want to keep on going ambitious."

A lot of mistakes condition the race of Fiat Punto's drivers in the Junior World Rally Championship fourth round. Giandomenico Basso has had two punctures and one time he went out of the road. For Basso the final 7th place, after a good remount during the 3rd leg with the win in tree special stages. Chemin, 8th at the end, went out of the road a lot of time. Some electrical problem forced Caldani to retire, also penalized by tree punctures.

A dramatic final day of the Rallye Deutschland proved significant throughout the entry. While several WRC contenders suffered, so did the FIA Junior World Rally Championship crews. Of the 13 drivers who completed yesterday's second leg, only nine were left in the event at the finish.
British Champions Martin Rowe and Chris Wood were the top Ford Puma crew back in Trier this evening, despite having been hampered today by a car that seemed to be down on power. "We didn't notice it before but the roads were wet on Friday and for part of yesterday so maybe it wasn't so obvious. Perhaps it was good that we didn't need to push hard today."
The Astra team principal Luca Pregliasco said: "I'm proud of Martin's drive on this rally and delighted that he finished in the points. If he had not suffered a puncture yesterday he might even have been on the podium tonight."
Rowe ended the event in fifth place to move up to seventh in the championship alongside fellow Ford Puma driver Roger Feghali.
Belgian driver Francois Duval and co-driver Jean-Marc Fortin took a 43.2 seconds lead into today's final seven stages and set fastest time on the opening stage to go even further ahead. They retained their lead on the second stage but it all went wrong on the next. "We were about half way through the stage when we came over a crest where there was a lot of mud on the road," he explained. "The car spun off the road and into a bank that bent the exhaust pipe. That meant we couldn't move or restart the car until spectators came to help but by then we'd lost around five minutes and slipped to fifth."
Any hopes of a fight back to fourth place were dashed on SS21 St Wendeler Land 2 when a recurring electrical problem kept blowing the fuses to the fuel pumps, leaving Duval to coast into retirement.
Team manager Chris Birkbeck said: "It was really bad luck for Francois. The impact badly bent the exhaust and it became clogged with mud from the bank. We can't be certain but it is possible that it also led to the electrical fault. Francois was able to continue for a while but it was soon clear that it was not possible to stay in the event and so he had to stop. Nevertheless we showed that the Puma is very competitive on all three types of asphalt in Germany so we can go to San Remo confident of similar performance. Maybe there we will have the chance of a taste of champagne."
Lebanese driver Roger Feghali and Italian co-driver Nicola Arena looked set for a comfortable finish but also ended the rally among the retirements. "We knew we couldn't catch the car in front and were fairly safe from the one behind so there was no reason to throw it all away chasing the impossible," he said. "Unfortunately our clutch failed with two stages to go and we had to retire."
He will have company on the next event as the Astra team will enter a fifth (non-registered) Ford Puma for Feghali's younger brother Dado. Looking ahead to next month's penultimate championship round, Astra's Luca Pregliasco said: "San Remo is our home event and we know it well. Hopefully that will be a decisive factor in the end result and we are very much looking forward to it."
